The Ultimate Camper Road Trip Around Lake Kremasta

While most tourists head straight to the beaches of the Ionian Islands, just a few hours inland lies a breathtaking fjord landscape: Lake Kremasta, Central Greece's best-kept secret.

Lake Kremasta fjord landscape in Central Greece

Ready to leave the tourist trail behind and discover the real, rugged Greece? Lake Kremasta (Λίμνη Κρεμαστών) is Central Greece's best-kept secret. While most visitors head straight for the beaches of the Ionian Islands, just a few hours inland from the coast you'll find a breathtaking fjord landscape sometimes called the 'Greek Canada'.

This route takes you around the country's largest artificial lake. Expect impressive bridges, deep gorges, outdoor adventures, and winding roads through dense pine forests that your Volkswagen T6 camper will handle with ease.

Route at a Glance

  • Total distance: Approximately 120 kilometres (a full loop around the lake)
  • Travel time: We recommend setting aside 2 to 3 days so you can stop at the many viewpoints and local tavernas.
  • Best time to visit: Spring (when the mountains are a vivid green) and autumn.

The Secret Beneath the Surface: A Piece of History

Looking out over the glassy, turquoise water today, it's hard to imagine that this dramatic fjord landscape only came into existence in the 1960s. Lake Kremasta is a man-made reservoir, created by the construction of the massive Kremasta Dam in 1965.

This ambitious project was essential at the time to supply Greece with clean hydroelectric power, but it came at a significant cost. To fill the reservoir, dozens of historic villages, farmland, and centuries-old churches had to give way to the rising water.

🏛️ The Submerged History of Episkopi

The best-known example is the Byzantine Church of the Virgin of Episkopi, a magnificent monument from the 8th century. Before the valley was permanently flooded, archaeologists worked urgently to remove the unique, centuries-old frescoes from its walls. These can still be admired today in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. The church itself? It still stands intact on the lake bed, tens of metres beneath the spot your camper now drives over.

When water levels drop significantly during the dry summer months, remnants of old stone walls and foundations can still be seen breaking the surface near some of the banks. You are literally driving over the tops of a sunken world.

Day 1: From the Coast to the Tatarnis Bridge

You begin the journey from the lower-lying coastal regions, slowly climbing northward. Before long you swap the highway for Greece's characteristic back roads.

The Iconic Tatarnis Bridge (Γέφυρα Τατάρνας)

This is the moment you get your first real view of the lake. The Tatarnis Bridge is a modern architectural feat linking two regions (Aitoloakarnania and Evrytania). Pull into the spacious lay-by just before the bridge to take in the view. The water here is often so blue it seems almost unreal.

🍽️ Our Insider Tip for the Evening

Near the bridge you'll find several local tavernas. After a wonderful meal of local specialities — fresh trout or traditional pork tenderloin — ask the owner whether you can park your camper on their land for the night. The hospitality here is extraordinary, and you'll wake up to mist dancing above the water.

Day 2: Hidden Monasteries and the Episkopi Bridge

On the second day you head deeper into the mountains along the eastern shore of the lake. The roads are narrower here, but the compact size of the VW T6 means you navigate them without any stress.

The Tatarna Monastery (Μονή Τατάρνας)

Tucked into the forest, this historic monastery dates back to the 12th century. It's an oasis of calm. The monks often welcome travellers warmly with a cup of traditional Greek coffee. Note: appropriate dress (long trousers/skirt and covered shoulders) is required.

The Episkopi Bridge

In the afternoon you descend back toward the water and cross the Episkopi Bridge — an older, narrower bridge sitting just above the water's surface. From here you have access to several unpaved tracks leading directly to the waterfront, the perfect spot to park your camper and enjoy a picnic with the rear doors open.

Action on and Around the Water

Lake Kremasta isn't just a picture-perfect backdrop; it's an outstanding destination for activities. Because mass tourism hasn't reached here, you often have the water and nature entirely to yourself.

🚣 Explore the fjords by boat or kayak

The absolute must-do for experiencing the lake up close is a boat trip. Local guides will take you through the deep gorges and hidden caves. More sporty? Hire a kayak or SUP board. The water is extremely calm, letting you glide silently through the Greek fjords.

🤿 Dive into a sunken world

For the truly adventurous, the lake is a unique freshwater dive site. Experienced divers can descend with local dive schools to glide over the sunken remains of old villages and bridges.

🥾 Hike to spectacular viewpoints

Several walking trails around the lake lead you through pine forests to elevated clifftops with extraordinary panoramic views.

Quick Overview: Facilities Along the Route

Because the Kremasta region is still pristine and undiscovered, preparation is key. Fortunately, all Ionian Nomads campers are fully self-contained.

Why This Route Is Perfect in Our VW T6

Many larger campers (over 7.5 metres) avoid the Kremasta loop because of the sharp bends, steep gradients, and overhanging branches in the forest. Our hand-built Volkswagen T6 campers are made precisely for this terrain:

  • Built for mountain roads: The powerful engine pulls you effortlessly up the steepest inclines, and the T6's narrow width and tight turning circle mean you glide through narrow villages.
  • Maximum parking freedom: You can park easily at small viewpoints or right by the water's edge — spots where larger campers simply can't fit or aren't legally allowed to stay.
  • Premium comfort: After a day of hiking or kayaking, enjoy a cold drink from the compressor fridge, cook a local meal in the smart kitchen, and fold out a proper double bed in seconds.
