Compact campervan vs large motorhome: which size for Greece?

The road width reality

Greece's motorways — the Egnatia Odos, the Ionia Odos — are modern and wide enough for anything. The moment you exit onto a regional road, the picture changes. Coastal roads winding from Preveza down to Parga, or across Lefkada's mountainous spine, are frequently narrow in places, without a hard shoulder, and with stone walls or drop-offs on one side.

In a compact van around 2m wide, you can pull in and pass comfortably. In a larger motorhome with wider mirrors, the same stretch takes more concentration. Village streets are often narrower still — a compact van can navigate Parga's old town or a mountain village with care; a much larger motorhome often can't, full stop.

Height restrictions worth knowing about

Some beach car parks and covered or underground parking in towns like Preveza and Lefkada Town have height barriers, and a handful of older mountain-road tunnels can be tight. A campervan under about 2.1m clears the vast majority of these without issue; a larger motorhome with air conditioning units or roof fittings can end up over that line.

Ferry vehicle decks also vary in height and length classification between operators and routes — if you're planning to take a ferry to one of the Ionian islands, check the specific operator's current vehicle categories and clearance before booking rather than assuming a figure.

Fuel: a real cost difference

As a rule of thumb, a compact campervan is noticeably more fuel-efficient than a large, heavier motorhome — exact consumption depends on the specific vehicle, but the gap is usually significant enough to matter over a one- or two-week trip. Check current diesel prices before you travel, since they move with the wider European market, and factor the difference into your budget if you're comparing vehicle sizes.

The beaches you might miss

Some of the best spots in Western Greece sit at the end of narrow, unpaved or steep access roads — a handful of coves on Lefkada, farm tracks between Parga and Igoumenitsa, and similar spots elsewhere. In a compact van, you can generally reach these, or at least get close enough to walk the last stretch. In a much larger motorhome, you're more likely to park on the main road and either walk further or skip the spot entirely.

Where a motorhome genuinely wins

To be fair: a large motorhome wins on interior comfort. A permanent fixed bed, a full bathroom with a door you can close, and headroom to walk around without ducking matter for long-term touring or families with small children. If you're spending most of your time on well-equipped campsites with large pitches and driving relatively little, the size penalty barely registers.

The sweet spot for Western Greece

It's why our fleet is built around a compact size — not because bigger wasn't an option, but because these are the roads we drive every week. It clears most height barriers, threads most villages, parks in a normal space, and gets you to beaches a larger vehicle often can't reach.

It's less spacious inside than a full-size motorhome — but the point of the Ionian coast isn't sitting inside your vehicle. It's being outside, under the olive trees, by the water.
