Beyond the waterfall: the Dimosari Gorge scramble and loop trail, Lefkada

Past the pool everyone swims in, the Dimosari Gorge keeps going โ€” a rougher, quieter stretch of boulders, plane trees and a steep climbing trail out to the hill villages above Nydri.

The green Dimosari gorge with boulders and a stream, Lefkada

Most visitors turn back at the main pool, dry off, and head to the car park โ€” and that's exactly the right call for most people. This guide picks up from there: what's actually beyond the waterfall everyone photographs, for readers who want more than the standard fifteen-minute walk.

For the drive from Nydri, parking, and the walk in to the main waterfall and pool, see our Nydri Waterfalls guide โ€” we won't repeat that here. Everything below starts at the pool at the base of the main cascade, where the maintained tourist path ends.

This guide assumes you've already made it to the main Dimosari waterfall and pool. If you haven't been yet, our Nydri Waterfalls guide covers the drive, parking and the easy walk in.

Where the maintained path actually ends

The paved, signed section of the trail โ€” the one with footbridges and the occasional step โ€” finishes at the main pool. From there, the ground underfoot changes: it's riverbed, boulders and rock rather than a built path, and there's no more signage.

Some visitors continue scrambling upstream along the streambed itself, past the main pool into a narrower stretch of gorge with smaller pools between the boulders. This isn't an official or maintained trail, though โ€” it's a rough, informal continuation that depends entirely on water levels and how far you're willing to boulder-hop. We couldn't verify a fixed distance or a mapped endpoint for it, so treat any figures you see for this stretch, including on this page, as rough estimates rather than facts.

The documented alternative: climbing out to Rachi and Neochori

If you'd rather follow an actual mapped trail instead of guessing at a riverbed, there's a proper hiking route that also starts at the waterfall: a moderate loop that climbs steeply out of the gorge on a stone monopati (mule path) โ€” with a rope bolted in for the steepest first stretch โ€” then continues through hillside pine and olive terrain to the village of Neochori and back down through Rachi.

Trail-mapping sites list this loop at anywhere from around 7 km to just under 12 km depending on the exact variant and starting point, with roughly 300โ€“400 m of elevation gain โ€” figures worth double-checking on a mapping app like AllTrails or Outdooractive before you set out, since sources vary. Expect forest shade for most of the way, with occasional views back down over Nydri and the channel islands.

Difficulty and who this is for

Both extensions are a step up from the standard waterfall walk. The riverbed scramble is unmarked and uneven, with wet rock underfoot the whole way โ€” fine for confident, agile walkers in decent footwear, not for young children or anyone unsteady on their feet. The loop trail is easier to follow but has a genuinely steep, rope-assisted section right after the waterfall, followed by several kilometres of proper walking.

Conditions in the gorge can change quickly after rain โ€” water levels and footing in the riverbed aren't something we can assess from a written guide, so check locally on the day rather than relying on this page for current conditions.

What to bring

  • Proper grip โ€” water shoes for the riverbed scramble, or trail shoes/boots for the loop trail
  • A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch if you're wading and swimming
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person โ€” there's no shade or facilities beyond the main pool
  • A map or offline trail app (AllTrails or Outdooractive) if you're doing the loop trail, since signage thins out fast
  • Sun protection for the exposed hillside stretches on the loop

Swimming beyond the main pool

The main pool at the base of the waterfall is the reliable swimming spot, and it's genuinely cold โ€” spring-fed water that some local sources put at around 16โ€“18ยฐC even in the height of summer. Whatever pools exist further upstream are smaller, colder, and not something we can promise you'll find in good swimming condition, since flow and pool depth both depend heavily on rainfall and season.

The waterfall itself is also seasonal โ€” several local sources note it runs strongest from autumn through spring and can slow to a trickle by late summer, so a scramble upstream in August may turn up far less water than the same walk in May.

Best time to go

May, June and September give you the best balance: reasonable water flow, warm weather, and a gorge that's had time to dry out from spring rain without yet running low. Arrive early โ€” by 9am if you can โ€” to have the boulders and upper stretch to yourself before day-trippers arrive at the main pool.

Avoid attempting the riverbed scramble soon after heavy rain, when footing is worse and water can rise quickly in a narrow gorge. By late summer, expect reduced flow and a much smaller pool.

Combine it with a beach day

Dessimi Beach, a pebble beach on the Geni peninsula around 6 km from Nydri, makes an easy, low-key afternoon after a morning in the gorge โ€” calm, sheltered water, kayak rental, and a couple of beach bars.

For something more dramatic, our ranked guide to Western Greece's best beaches covers Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma on Lefkada's west coast in detail โ€” worth the extra drive if you're making a full day of it.

The details

Starting pointDimosari/Nydri waterfall car park, ~3.5 km south of Nydri
Extension typeInformal riverbed scramble (unofficial), or a mapped loop trail via Rachi and Neochori
Loop distanceRoughly 7โ€“12 km depending on the variant โ€” verify on a trail app
DifficultyModerate to challenging beyond the main waterfall
CostFree
FacilitiesNone beyond the main pool
SignpostingNone in the riverbed; the loop trail is waymarked, but check a GPX before relying on it

Is it worth it?

If all you want is the classic photo and a swim, stop at the main pool โ€” that's covered in full in our Nydri Waterfalls guide. But if you want a proper half-day out, the loop trail up to Rachi and Neochori is the more reliable way to earn it: real elevation, real forest, and a view back down over the gorge you just climbed out of.

Treat the riverbed scramble upstream as a bonus for confident, well-shod walkers on a low-water day, not a promised trail with a fixed distance โ€” go slow, turn back when the going gets uncertain, and let the loop trail be your main event instead.
