September: the sweet spot

September in Western Greece is one of Europe's better-kept secrets. Crowds thin out noticeably once schools reopen across Europe, while the weather barely changes — daytime temperatures typically sit around 25–30°C, dropping to a comfortable range at night, and the sea stays warm enough for confident swimming through most of the month.

Rain is genuinely rare in the first half of September; a brief shower toward the end of the month is more the exception than the rule. The beaches that felt crowded in August — Porto Katsiki, the coastal road around Lefkada, popular spots near Parga and Syvota — become noticeably more spacious.

October: a different character

October is quieter and cooler, with an atmospheric quality that surprises a lot of visitors — the landscape shifts from summer-scorched to a deeper autumn green after the season's first rains. Daytime temperatures are typically in the low-to-mid 20s°C, dropping enough at night that a light jumper is worth packing, and sea temperatures across the Ionian generally stay above 20°C through most of the month, still comfortable for swimming.

October brings the real possibility of rain — a handful of days across the month, sometimes with a dramatic but short-lived thunderstorm. Some seasonal businesses (beach bars, a few of the smaller campsites) start closing, but core infrastructure — supermarkets, petrol stations, pharmacies, and tavernas in town centres — keeps running year-round.

If you're planning an October trip, aim for the first two weeks — you get the autumn atmosphere with most services still running.

• Flights: shoulder-season fares to PVK are typically noticeably cheaper than July/August, though October sees reduced frequency alongside the lower prices.
• Campsites: many drop their nightly rate in September and further in October — check current rates directly, as they vary by site and season.
• Boat trips and excursions: often discounted, with a much better chance of getting the departure time you want.
• Hospitality: prices for eating out don't change much, but with fewer covers a night, portions and attention from taverna owners often feel more generous.

Over a two-week trip, shoulder-season savings on flights and campsites alone can add up meaningfully compared to the same itinerary in August.

September remains well-connected, with regular scheduled and charter flights from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands among other markets — PVK's traffic in September typically runs at roughly two-thirds of the August peak.

October sees a significant drop in volume as the season winds down, with fewer charter routes and reduced frequency on scheduled carriers. Book October flights early if your dates are fixed, and build in a buffer day given the lower frequency on some routes.
