Getting on and under the water around Lefkada, Parga, and Syvota
From Vassiliki's legendary thermal wind to sea caves, dive sites, and island-hopping sails — a guide to getting on and under the water around Lefkada, Parga, and Syvota.

Western Greece isn't just a place to admire the water from a sunbed. Between Lefkada, Parga, and Syvota, the coastline supports a genuinely wide spread of water sports — a reliable thermal wind for kitesurfing and windsurfing, sea caves made for kayaking, clear-water dive sites, easy snorkelling, calm bays for stand-up paddleboarding, and some of the best day-sailing grounds in the Mediterranean.
Having a campervan as your base makes this easier rather than harder: instead of committing to one beach for a week, you can chase whichever coastline has the best conditions on a given day, and pack the gear back in once you're done.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing
Vassiliki, on Lefkada's southern tip, is one of Europe's best-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, and the reason is a thermal wind so reliable that local windsurfers gave it a name: Eric. Mornings in the bay are typically calm and flat, ideal for beginners to practise. Through the early afternoon the wind builds steadily from the south, reaching roughly 15–25 knots by mid-afternoon most days from May through October — a pattern predictable enough that schools plan lessons around it.
Milos Beach in Vassiliki is the centre of it all. Club Vassiliki (also known as Club Vass), founded in 1987, and Wildwind both operate here, alongside independent instructors. The bay's shape helps too: the wind blows cross-shore rather than out to sea, which gives beginners a natural margin for error.
Season runs roughly May to October, with the strongest and most consistent wind from June to September. It suits complete beginners in the morning and improving intermediates in the afternoon. Lesson and rental prices vary by season and operator — check current rates locally before you commit to a course.
Sea kayaking
A kayak gets you into places no road or tour boat can reach. Lefkada's west coast, between Porto Katsiki and Egremni, hides a run of sea caves and rock arches beneath towering white cliffs — a half-day guided paddle along the cliff base is one of the best ways to see this stretch of coastline properly.
Parga's coastline offers a gentler alternative: sheltered water around the Venetian castle headland and out to the small islet of Panagia opposite the harbour, with plenty of spots to beach the kayak and swim. Further south, Syvota's mini-archipelago of tiny islands and channels — including its well-known 'Blue Lagoon' — rewards exploring at kayak level rather than from a crowded day-tripper boat.
Season runs April to October, with the calmest water in the early morning during peak summer. No experience is needed for guided tours — the sit-on-top kayaks used are stable and forgiving. Guided half- and full-day trips, and solo or tandem rentals by the day, are widely available; prices vary by season and operator, so check current rates locally.
Scuba diving
The Ionian doesn't have the Red Sea's tropical colour, but it makes up for it with genuinely good visibility, dramatic underwater geology, and a reasonable variety of marine life — expect swim-throughs and caverns, sponge- and soft-coral-covered walls, octopus, moray eels, grouper, and the occasional loggerhead turtle.
Lefkada has established dive centres operating from Nydri and the east coast, with trips to underwater walls near Meganisi and, conditions permitting, the submerged features off the west coast. Parga also has diving available from town, with boat access to nearby arches and cavern systems within a short ride.
Season is roughly May to October, with the best visibility from June to September. Options range from a no-experience-needed 'discover scuba' taster through to certified dives and full courses for anyone wanting to get qualified. All equipment is provided by the dive centre — costs vary by operator and season, so check current rates locally.
Snorkelling
This is the easiest way into the water, and in this region it's genuinely worth doing rather than a consolation prize for not diving. Agiofili Beach on Lefkada has a small, sheltered cove with rocky sides that hold plenty of fish and the odd octopus. Porto Katsiki's underwater rocks, on either side of the main beach, reward an early arrival before the crowds. Syvota's channels between the small islands are shallow, warm, and rocky-bottomed — easy, unhurried snorkelling.
The stand-out, though, is Antipaxos — the tiny island south of Paxos, reachable as a day trip from Parga or Lefkada. Its beaches, Vrika and Voutoumi, sit above some of the clearest water in the entire Mediterranean, and the snorkelling matches the reputation.
Season runs May to October and it suits any level — if you can swim, you can snorkel. Mask and snorkel rental is available cheaply at most organised beaches, and many kayak or boat tours build in a snorkelling stop; if you're doing several days of it, a decent-fitting mask of your own is worth buying locally rather than relying on rental sets.
Stand-up paddleboarding
SUP has taken off across the region over the past few years, and the calm morning water along this coastline suits it well. Mikros Gialos and Nydri Bay on Lefkada's east coast both offer sheltered, mirror-flat mornings; Lichnos Beach near Parga is warm, calm, and a good spot for a first attempt; Syvota's harbour lets you explore the coastline and islands at your own pace.
Season is May to October, and mornings — before any afternoon wind picks up — are the best time to go. It's an easy sport to pick up; most people are comfortably standing within fifteen minutes. Board rental is widely available by the hour or day at organised beaches, with guided tours also on offer in places.
Sailing
The Ionian is one of the Mediterranean's classic sailing grounds, and Nydri on Lefkada's east coast is a major charter base, with yachts heading out daily. For non-sailors, a skippered day charter is the easiest way in — typical routes head to Meganisi's fishing villages and turquoise bays, past Skorpios (swimmable off its beaches, though you can't land), and sometimes on to Kastos or Kalamos for a taverna lunch.
Multi-day trips open up more of the Ionian, with routes south to Ithaca and Kefalonia — Fiskardo's Venetian harbour is a popular overnight stop — or north towards Paxos and Antipaxos. Learn-to-sail courses are also offered by schools based around Nydri for anyone wanting to build up to a bareboat charter.
Season runs May to October, busiest in July and August, with September offering warmer water and quieter anchorages. Day charters need no experience since a skipper comes with the boat; bareboat charter requires certification. Charter and course prices vary widely by boat size, season, and operator — check current rates locally.
