Vikos Gorge hiking guide: from an easy viewpoint to the full crossing

Vikos Gorge at a glance

Vikos Gorge cuts through the Vikos–Aoös National Park on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, carved by the Voidomatis River through the limestone of the Pindus Mountains. It holds a Guinness World Record, though not the one people often assume: according to the 2005 edition of the Guinness Book of Records, the gorge is 900 metres deep and 1,100 metres wide at its record cross-section, giving it the greatest depth relative to width of any gorge on Earth — a depth-to-width ratio of roughly 0.82. In raw depth it isn't the world's deepest gorge (that distinction goes to canyons elsewhere, including the Grand Canyon), but stand on the rim and the proportions feel almost vertical regardless.

The gorge is flanked by the Zagorochoria, 46 traditional stone villages connected by arched bridges and cobbled paths — UNESCO inscribed the wider Zagori Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site in 2023. For hikers, Vikos offers everything from a half-hour viewpoint stroll to a demanding full-day crossing. Here are four routes, from easiest to most ambitious.

Beloi viewpoint: the easy win

If you only have an hour and want to see the gorge at its most dramatic, this is the one. The trail from Vradeto village to the Beloi viewpoint is short, mostly flat, and delivers one of the most spectacular views in Greece — a different vantage point from the Oxya viewpoint near Monodendri, covered in our general Zagori & Vikos Gorge guide, so if you have time for both they show the gorge from two very different angles.

The path winds through low vegetation and scattered pines along the gorge rim, well-trodden and easy to follow, with no scrambling or exposed sections. After roughly 20 minutes of gentle walking you reach a natural rock balcony jutting out over the void, with Vikos Gorge opening up in its full depth below and the forested floor impossibly far down.

Parking is informal — roadside bays and a small area near the village square in Vradeto — so arrive early on summer weekends rather than counting on space. The viewpoint faces roughly west, so afternoon light is best; mornings are quieter.

Voidomatis Springs: walk to crystal water

This short hike descends from Vikos village into the gorge floor to reach the springs where the Voidomatis emerges from the base of the cliffs — cold, clear, and by every account we could verify, genuinely drinkable straight from the source. The trail is well-marked but involves real elevation change, since you're walking into the gorge and back up again.

At the springs, flat white stones line the banks and the water is shallow enough to wade into, though the Voidomatis runs cold even in August. This is also where the full gorge crossing (below) meets the river, so on a summer day you'll likely cross paths with hikers finishing their big day out.

The full gorge crossing: Monodendri to Vikos village

This is the big one — the classic Vikos Gorge crossing, from Monodendri on the southern rim through the gorge floor to Vikos village on the northern side. It's a proper mountain hike: long, physically demanding, and genuinely spectacular.

From Monodendri (altitude roughly 1,060m), the trail descends steeply on a stone-paved kalderimi path into the gorge — around 600 metres of descent in the first hour or so, on centuries-old stone steps, loose rock and tree roots that demand attention. Once you reach the gorge floor, the character of the walk changes completely: towering cliffs on either side, dense riparian forest, and a dry or semi-dry riverbed that the trail follows northward, crossing it repeatedly on stepping stones. How wet those crossings get depends heavily on the season and recent rainfall — after spring rain or snowmelt, expect some to be more involved than a dry-footed hop. We couldn't confirm a reliable source stating the trail is ever fully closed by water levels, so treat crossing conditions as variable rather than guaranteed.

About halfway through, you reach the Voidomatis Springs described above — the natural lunch spot, where you can refill bottles and rest before the climb out. From there, the trail begins its long ascent toward Vikos village: roughly 500 metres of climbing on a rocky path that switches back through forest and exposed scree. In summer heat this final push is the section that earns the 'hard' rating — start early.

Trail markings

The route follows red-and-white blazes as part of the O3, the long-distance Pindos trail that runs from the lake at Ioannina to Mount Gramos — so signage is generally consistent, though a few junctions on the gorge floor can be confusing in poor visibility. A GPS track on your phone (AllTrails and Wikiloc both list routes for this hike) is good insurance — download it before you leave Ioannina, since mobile signal inside the gorge is effectively nonexistent.

Logistics

The challenge with this hike is that it's point-to-point: you start in Monodendri and finish in Vikos village, around 30 minutes apart by car.

Vradeto Steps + Beloi combo

This route combines two highlights: the historic Vradeto Steps (Skala Vradetou) and the Beloi viewpoint above, for a longer and more rewarding loop.

From Kapesovo, follow signs to the Vradeto Steps — a dry-stone kalderimi staircase of around 1,100 steps laid out in roughly 39 switchbacks over about 1.5km, climbing some 250 metres up the cliff face to reach Vradeto village on the rim above. It's thought to date to the 18th century and was the only link between the two villages until a road bypassing the gorge was built in 1974; the staircase has been a protected historical monument since 1988. It's steep but never dangerous, and the stonework is genuinely impressive.

From Vradeto, the flat trail continues to the Beloi viewpoint (see above). Take in the gorge views, then return the way you came — the descent of the Vradeto Steps is the trickier direction, since the stone can be slippery, so take your time.

The steps face south and can be brutally hot in the midday sun from June to September — start early or go late.

Getting there from Preveza (PVK)

From Preveza/Aktion Airport, it's roughly 3 hours by car: head north on the E55 toward Ioannina, then follow signposted roads to Vitsa, Monodendri or Papigo depending on which trailhead you're aiming for. Parking at the trailheads is informal rather than a managed car park: roadside bays and small areas near the village squares in Monodendri, Vradeto and Kapesovo. On summer weekends, arrive before mid-morning for the full crossing, since space is limited rather than expandable.

What to bring

When to go

May to June and September to October are the best months — spring brings wildflowers and flowing water, autumn brings golden light and fewer crowds.

July and August are hot, with gorge temperatures that can top 35°C; if you're hiking in summer, start at dawn for the full crossing and be off exposed sections before midday.

Winter and early spring (November–March) bring snow at higher elevations and icy trail conditions. The full crossing isn't advisable without mountain hiking experience and the right equipment in these months.

Can you do it as a day trip from Preveza?

For the Beloi viewpoint or the Voidomatis Springs walk, yes — roughly three hours up, an hour or two hiking, three hours back. It's a long day in the van, but doable.

The full gorge crossing as a day trip is more of a stretch: six hours of driving plus five to six hours of hiking adds up to a 12-hour day starting before dawn. Possible, but you'll be exhausted and you'll miss the best part of Zagori — an evening in one of its villages.

Our recommendation: drive up the afternoon before, stay overnight in Monodendri or nearby, hike the next morning, and drive back in the evening. One night in Zagori turns the trip from a forced march into something worth remembering.

Where to stay near the trailheads

The Zagorochoria have some of Greece's most atmospheric small guesthouses — restored stone mansions with fireplaces and mountain views. Book ahead in July and August, when rooms fill fast; outside peak summer you'll usually find availability on short notice.
