Why Igoumenitsa, not Patras

Patras is Greece's other major Italy-facing port and handles more traffic overall, but it sits roughly 3–4 hours further south and east than Igoumenitsa — meaning a longer additional drive once you're off the boat. Igoumenitsa puts you within about 45 minutes of Parga and just over an hour of Preveza, which makes it the more direct entry point if the Ionian coast and PVK area are your actual destination rather than a stop on the way to Athens.

The main crossings

Several operators run the Adriatic crossing to Igoumenitsa, with departures from three main Italian ports. Frequency and duration vary by season and by exactly which operator you book — treat the figures below as typical ranges rather than a fixed schedule.

Venice also has seasonal sailings to Greece, but typically routed via Patras rather than Igoumenitsa directly, adding significant extra driving at the Greek end. Always check the specific operator's current schedule before booking, since routes and frequencies shift between seasons.

What the crossing is actually like

All of these routes carry cars, motorbikes and campervans without issue, and pricing is typically based on vehicle length rather than a flat fee — a compact campervan costs meaningfully less than a full-size motorhome. On the longer overnight routes (Bari and Ancona especially), most operators offer a "camping on board" option: you park on an open deck and sleep in your own van with access to shore power, which is noticeably cheaper than booking a cabin. For the shorter Brindisi crossing, an airline-style seat or a few hours in the van is usually enough.

Booking and documents

Book ahead for July and August — sailings fill up, and last-minute vehicle space is the first thing to disappear. You'll need a valid passport or EU ID card, your vehicle registration document, and proof of valid insurance (a Green Card, or confirmation that your policy already covers Greece) — check this with your insurer well before you travel, since assumptions here are exactly the kind of thing worth verifying rather than guessing at.

Vehicle height and length matter for pricing on every operator's site, so measure your van (including any roof box or bike rack) before you get a quote.

From Igoumenitsa to the Ionian coast

Once you're off the boat, the drive to Parga is short and simple — around 45 km, roughly 45 minutes, following the coast road south. Continuing on to Preveza adds another stretch, for a total of a little over an hour from the port. Both legs are toll-free national road, not motorway, so budget realistic driving time rather than motorway speeds.

If Lefkada is your first stop rather than Parga or Preveza, plan on a bit under two hours in total from the port, since it's a further drive south past Preveza and across the bridge onto the island.
