Lefkada by campervan: beaches, roads and campsites
The only Ionian island you can drive straight onto โ no ferry, no schedule. Here's how to explore it in a campervan, beach by beach.
You're rolling down the coastal road from Aktion, windows cracked, salt air drifting through the cabin. Then, without buying a ticket or checking a timetable, you simply drive onto an island. The floating bridge to Lefkada takes about thirty seconds. No drama โ just a lagoon shimmering on either side, and a whole Greek island opening up ahead.
That's the thing about Lefkada (you'll also see it written Lefkas). It's the only Ionian island connected to the mainland by road, which changes the maths for a campervan trip completely: no ferry booking, no port timing, no squeezing onto a car deck in August.
Why Lefkada works so well for a campervan
You pick up your van at Aktion Airport (PVK), and roughly 30 minutes later you're on the island โ no reservation, no timetable to work around.
The island itself is a manageable size: about 35 km north to south and 15 km east to west. Small enough to cover properly in a few days, varied enough to fill a week without repeating yourself. The west coast has the famous cliff-backed beaches; the east coast is gentler, with pebble coves and calm water; the interior is olive groves and mountain villages.
And you sleep wherever the day takes you โ a beach in the south with a campsite nearby, or a mountain village at sunset with a view from your own doorstep.
The best beaches, and how a campervan actually reaches them
Not every famous Lefkada beach is equally easy for a van. Here's the honest picture.
Kathisma Beach โ Easiest access
A long, wide stretch of west-coast sand with a proper parking area right above the beach on a paved, manageable access road. A good first stop โ arrives busy by mid-morning in July and August.
Porto Katsiki โ Worth the effort
White cliffs, impossibly blue water, one of Greece's most photographed beaches. There's a dedicated car park at the top; from there it's a long staircase down. The road in narrows toward the end and dead-ends at the lot, so go early or late to dodge the crowds.
Egremni Beach โ Currently closed to road/foot access โ check before you go
Egremni was closed for years after a landslide destroyed the original access path, and as of 2026 the municipality has again closed the staircase and land access following further rockfalls and ground instability โ legally, going down is at your own risk regardless of what you find on the ground. The safest and currently recommended way to see it is a boat trip from Vasiliki harbour. Conditions here change; check locally before planning around it.
Mikros Gialos โ Sheltered south-coast cove
A small pebbly bay on the south coast, reached by a narrow but paved road with limited parking near the beach. Arrive before noon or after 4pm in peak season.
Agiofili Beach โ Reward-hike or water taxi
A quiet cove near Vasiliki, reached by a roughly 15-minute coastal footpath or a short water taxi from Vasiliki harbour โ no direct road access, which is exactly why it stays uncrowded. Park in Vasiliki and walk or take the boat.
Dessimi Beach โ Easy east-coast alternative
A calm, pebbly bay near Nydri on the gentler east coast, with a campsite right on the beach. Easy access, no drama โ a good day when you want the beach outside your van door.
Where to stay: campsites on Lefkada
Lefkada has three solid, well-established campsite options spread across the island โ between them, you're never more than 30โ40 minutes from your next stop.
Camping Kariotes
North Lefkada, near the bridge, about 2 km from Lefkada Town
Operating since 1979, set in an olive grove with clean showers, a pool and a small shop. Close enough to walk or cycle into town.

East coast, near Nydri
One of the island's oldest campsites, right on a sheltered pebble bay โ you can step out of the van and into the water. The Nydri waterfalls are a short detour away.

The southernmost option, on a long beach with mountain views. Well positioned for day trips to Porto Katsiki and the southern beaches, with Vasiliki just around the corner.

Road conditions: what to know
The good news: Lefkada's main coastal ring road and the routes between major towns are paved and well-maintained โ fine for any campervan.
It gets more interesting on specific access roads: the west-coast ridge road between Kathisma and Porto Katsiki is scenic but winding, some interior village roads are narrow and unsigned, and anything larger than about 6 metres should think twice on the steepest beach-access roads.
The general rule: stick to the main coastal roads and you'll have zero issues. The tricky stretches are all on the last kilometre or two down to a specific beach โ and for those, the earlier in the day you go, the easier it is.
A 3-day Lefkada itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & the north
Pick up your van at Aktion Airport and drive to Lefkada. Cross the bridge and settle into Camping Kariotes. Spend the afternoon in Lefkada Town โ the harbour, the Venetian-era back streets, a waterfront dinner โ and stock up on groceries before heading out.
Day 2: West coast beaches
Head south along the west coast. Morning swim at Kathisma, then continue to Porto Katsiki for the afternoon (check locally on Egremni before adding it to the plan). Pack lunch โ there's not much between beaches. Drive to Poros Beach Camping for the night.
Day 3: The south & east
Morning at Agiofili (park in Vasiliki, walk or take the water taxi). Loop back up the east coast via Mikros Gialos for a lunch stop, with a detour to the Nydri waterfalls. End the day at Camping Dessimi Beach, or head back toward the bridge if you're moving on.

Practical tips
- Fuel up in Lefkada Town, Nydri or Vasiliki before heading to the west or south coast โ there's nothing between beaches.
- Best grocery selection is in Lefkada Town, plus a weekly Saturday market there for fresh produce.
- Campsite tap water is fine for washing and dishes; most people still buy drinking water at the supermarket.
- Locals pull onto the shoulder to let faster traffic pass on narrow roads โ return the favour.
- Leave beaches and wild spots cleaner than you found them.
