The complete Lefkada travel guide: villages, food and the best time to visit

The only Ionian island you can drive straight onto has a lot more going on than its cliff-top beaches — mountain villages, a distinctive earthquake-proof town, a lentil-growing plateau, and a coastline that changes character every few kilometres.

Most people who plan a trip to Lefkada start with a photo of Porto Katsiki's cliffs and work backwards from there. Fair enough — those beaches earned their reputation. But the island itself is bigger than its coastline: a mountainous interior of olive groves and stone villages, a harbour town built to survive earthquakes, and a food culture built around a lentil so prized it now carries EU protection.

This guide covers Lefkada as a destination rather than a single road trip — where to base yourself, what to eat, when to come, and what's worth your time beyond the beach. Lefkada at a glance

Lefkada (also spelled Lefkas) sits off Greece's western coast, technically an island but connected to the mainland by a causeway and a short floating bridge — the only major Greek island you can reach without a ferry. The regional unit's population is around 22,000, spread mostly between Lefkada town and a scatter of coastal and mountain villages.

How to get there, briefly

The short version: fly into Aktion Airport (PVK) on the mainland and you're across the bridge to Lefkada town in about 30 minutes. Driving from Athens takes roughly 4.5–5 hours via the Ionia Odos motorway, with tolls typically adding up to somewhere around €30–40; from Thessaloniki it's around 4 hours 19 minutes. KTEL long-distance buses also run from Athens, taking about 5 to 5.5 hours.

There's no ferry to worry about once you're on the mainland side — Lefkada's floating bridge carries road traffic across for free, with brief scheduled openings for boat traffic throughout the day.

Beyond the coast: mountain villages worth the detour

Head inland and uphill and Lefkada shows a completely different side — stone houses, plane-tree squares, and a pace of life the beach towns don't have.

Karya

The island's best-known mountain village, built around a lively central square shaded by a huge old plane tree. Karya is known island-wide for its embroidery tradition (known locally as karsanika), and its tavernas serve some of the best mountain cooking on Lefkada.

Englouvi

Higher and quieter still, Englouvi sits on a mountain plateau and is famous across Greece for one thing: its small, dark lentils, grown here since at least the 18th century and now an EU-protected (PDO) product. They're sold direct from producers in the village and appear on menus island-wide, usually dressed simply with olive oil, vinegar and onion.

Sivota & Poros

Two small, sheltered fishing settlements on the southeast coast, popular with sailors but easy to reach by road too — a slower-paced alternative to Nydri if you want a harbour view without the crowds.

Things to do beyond the beaches

Lefkada town

The island's capital surprises visitors expecting a typical whitewashed, blue-domed Greek island look. After centuries of destructive earthquakes, the town developed a distinctive building style instead — stone ground floors topped with lighter timber-and-metal upper storeys designed to flex rather than collapse when the ground shakes, giving the main square and its churches a character unlike anywhere else in Greece. Wander the pedestrian streets, stop at the small Archaeological Museum, and linger over coffee by the marina at sunset.

Nydri Waterfalls

A short, mostly shaded walk from the car park — around 15–20 minutes, roughly 350 metres — leads through a green gorge to Lefkada's best-known waterfall, with a cold pool at the base that's a welcome break from summer heat. Entry is free, and the flow is strongest in spring and early summer.

Cape Lefkatas

The dramatic cliffs at the island's southwestern tip drop around 60 metres into the Ionian, topped by a lighthouse and, according to a legend the ancient poet Sappho is said to have leapt from these cliffs — the story is mythology rather than confirmed history, but it's genuinely part of the site's ancient reputation, and the views alone are worth the drive.

Sailing and boat trips from Nydri

Nydri is one of the Ionian's key sailing hubs, with day trips running to nearby Meganisi, Skorpios and Madouri, and sheltered waters between Lefkada's east coast and the mainland considered some of the best cruising grounds in the Med.

Windsurfing at Vasiliki

Vasiliki's reliable afternoon thermal wind has made this small harbour one of Europe's better-known windsurfing spots, with several schools catering to beginners and intermediates alike.

The beaches, briefly

Lefkada's west coast beaches are the island's calling card — dramatic white cliffs and impossibly blue water at Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma — while the east and south coasts trade drama for calmer, more sheltered swimming at spots like Agiofili and Mikros Gialos. Want the postcard view

Porto Katsiki — arrive early, it's the busiest beach on the island by mid-morning.

Want easy access with amenities

Kathisma — paved road, proper parking, beach bars.

Want calm water and fewer crowds

Mikros Gialos or Agiofili — both reward a short walk or boat ride with a quieter cove.

Food and drink

Lefkada's food scene is unpretentious and built on a handful of ingredients the island does exceptionally well.

Englouvi lentils

Small, dark and EU-protected, these are the island's most distinctive product. Usually served simply — olive oil, vinegar, sliced onion — and worth buying direct from Englouvi if you make the trip up.

Savoro

Fried fish in a garlic-vinegar sauce, sometimes with raisins — a Lefkadian classic with roots in the island's Venetian past.

Vertzami wine

A deep red grape variety unique to Lefkada, produced in small quantities. Worth asking for by name in tavernas rather than defaulting to the house wine.

Local olive oil

The island's groves produce good oil, sold at small roadside stands and shops — a reliable souvenir that won't disappoint.

Where to stay

Lefkada doesn't really do mega-resorts — accommodation leans toward small hotels, apartments and studios, which suits the island.

Lefkada town

Best for culture, restaurants and an easy arrival if you're flying into PVK — everything is walkable, and the marina is lovely at sunset.

Nydri and the east coast

The island's main sailing hub, with the most tourist infrastructure after Lefkada town — supermarkets, car rentals, waterfront dining, and boat trips to the smaller islands nearby.

Vasiliki

A sportier, more relaxed base for windsurfers and kitesurfers, and the launch point for Agiofili beach and ferries to Kefalonia.

Agios Nikitas and the west coast

A small, largely car-free village with real character, putting you within walking distance of Milos beach and a short drive from Kathisma and Porto Katsiki.

Lefkada has a long season, but the sweet spot depends on what you're optimising for.

Day trips from Lefkada

Meganisi

A short ferry from Nydri reaches this tiny, pine-covered island with three sleepy villages and quiet swimming coves — a good lazy day by foot or scooter.

Kefalonia

Skorpios

The former private island of Aristotle Onassis is visible from Nydri's waterfront. It remains private, but boat trips loop around it and you can swim in the surrounding waters.

Practical tips

Beach parking at Porto Katsiki and Kathisma fills up by mid-morning in July and August — arrive before 10am or after 4pm.
Carry cash for beach canteens and smaller village tavernas; ATMs are concentrated in Lefkada town, Nydri and Vasiliki.
The west coast catches the prevailing wind, which is great for keeping cool and less great for beach umbrellas.
Reef shoes make a real difference on the island's pebble beaches, and high-SPF sunscreen is non-negotiable at midday.
Many shops in Lefkada town close for a siesta between roughly 2pm and 5pm.
