Skip Athens: why Aktion Airport (PVK) is the smart start for your Greek campervan trip

Every other campervan rental in Greece starts you in Athens, hours from the Ionian coast. Here's the actual flight and drive-time math for starting at Aktion Airport (PVK) instead.

Picture this: your plane touches down, you step onto the tarmac, and you feel the Ionian heat on your skin. Twenty minutes later you're standing beside your campervan with the keys in your hand. Thirty minutes after that, you're parked at a beach so blue it looks edited, with your feet in the sand.

Now picture the alternative: you land in Athens, spend an hour clearing the airport, then drive for four to five hours across the Greek mainland — tolls, motorway construction, and city traffic — before your trip has even started.

Same country, same holiday, a very different first day. If you're planning a campervan trip through Western Greece — the Ionian coast, Lefkada, Parga, Meteora — there's a smarter place to start, and almost nobody talks about it.

The Athens problem

Here's what nobody tells you when you start searching "campervan rental Greece": almost every rental company is based in or around Athens, with a handful in Thessaloniki. That makes sense if you're exploring the Peloponnese or the Saronic islands. But if the turquoise water of the Ionian coast is what drew you to Greece in the first place, Athens is the wrong starting point.

And it works the same way at the end of the trip. When you're sun-tired and ready to fly home, you'll face that same multi-hour drive back to Athens to return the van — a chunk of your holiday spent on the motorway at both ends, not on the coast.

Athens to Lefkada is roughly 4 to 5 hours of driving. Athens to Parga is over 5 hours. Either way, that's the better part of a day behind the wheel, plus €30–40 in tolls each way, before you've seen a single beach.

The PVK solution

Direct flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and other cities on Eurowings, Condor and other Lufthansa Group carriers.

The Netherlands — around 11% of passengers

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol on Transavia and others.

And that's just the top three. Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Vienna, Prague, Budapest — the route map covers most of Northern and Central Europe during the season. There's a good chance there's a direct flight from an airport near you, often for less than a flight to Athens.

What you save

Compare flying to Athens and driving to Western Greece against flying straight to PVK:

Time

The better part of a day at each end of your trip — driving out to the coast, then driving back to return the van before your flight. On a 7-day trip, that's a meaningful slice of your total time in Greece spent on a motorway instead of a beach.

Money

Tolls from Athens to the Ionian coast run roughly €30–40 each way, and the extra ~800km round trip burns noticeably more fuel in a campervan than in a car. All told, that's easily €100–200 you could spend on tavernas, boat trips, or an extra night somewhere beautiful instead.

Stress

Athens traffic is famously heavy, and the Attiki Odos toll motorway is often under construction. Finding your way out of a sprawling capital in a vehicle you picked up 20 minutes ago, possibly driving on the right for the first time, isn't how you want to start a holiday — and with PVK, you don't have to.
